The upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur from October 26–28, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to attend the East Asia Summit (EAS) alongside Chinese Premier Li Qiang and U.S. President Donald Trump, will highlight India’s balancing act between the Quad and BRICS.
While South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazilian President Lula da Silva will attend as observers at the ASEAN-related summits, leaders or representatives from China, Russia, Japan, India, Australia, and New Zealand are anticipated to attend the EAS. If Mr. Modi does visit Kuala Lumpur this week, he will have the opportunity to meet with all of his Quad counterparts as well as important BRICS founder members, as India gets ready to host both summits in the coming year. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan declared last week that he would attend the ASEAN-related summits, including the EAS, and government officials stated that Mr. Modi was “likely” to attend, even though the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not yet confirmed his attendance.
